Popular history suggests that the drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the mid-1870s, where it was invented for a banquet hosted by Winston Churchill’s mother.

Ingredients
2 oz Buffalo Trace bourbon
1 oz Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Orange peel (for garnish)
Method
Add the bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled
Strain into a chilled coupe
Express the orange peel and use as garnish
